Backup Success Rate
The share of scheduled backup jobs that completed successfully in the period.
Formula
Successful backup jobs ÷ Scheduled backup jobs × 100
Why Track It
Backups are the last defense against ransomware and hardware loss. Failed jobs that nobody notices are how an MSP finds out, during an incident, that there is nothing to restore.
How It Is Measured
From the backup platform, count scheduled jobs that finished with a success status and divide by all scheduled jobs in the period. Count jobs that did not start as failures. Report by client and by protected system, and track how long any system has gone without a successful backup.
Constraints
Success status only means the job ran without error. Systems never added to a backup schedule do not appear at all, so reconcile protected systems against the asset list.
Measurement Note
Serverion recommends a success rate above 98%. A job marked successful is not a restore that works, so pair this with restore testing.
